The Movies Usually Get It Right – But Not Always

Even though I’ve been married to the same man for 75% of my life, I always introduce him to people as “my first husband.” It keeps him on his toes!

But he knows he has nothing to worry about because he knows I love him to death. If you read my more detailed bio, you’ll see why I love him so much. He’s a complex man with many rich and varied layers. I wouldn’t have had nearly as interesting or exciting a life if I had married that guy who was going to be a podiatrist! My husband, still jealous after all these years, still reminds me of that occasionally.

My husband and I love a good romance movie. One of our favorites is Sweet Home Alabama – the tropes in that one are resplendent! Our favorite line is “I married you so I could kiss you anytime I want.” We still kiss each other when we get up in the morning and  when we go to bed at night and lots of times in between. I highly recommend it.

Another one of our favorite movies is Notting Hill. Who doesn’t love the line “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”? We were so enamored of that movie we watched it more times than I can count. We even visited Notting Hill when we went to London and found the bookstore where the movie was filmed.

The line we like the most in Jerry Maguire is “You had me at hello.” That one really resonates with my husband because he says he fell in love with me at first sight.

The movie that doesn’t get it right is Love Story. The iconic quote, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” is the exact opposite of true. First of all, if you really love someone you don’t ever want to do anything that would hurt them – but if you do happen do something that needs an apology, you should say you’re sorry immediately and probably several times. Of course, I’m never wrong, and I never need to apologize. (I might need some work on that.)I wish everyone could be in love as much as we are. And I wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day!
